Holiday Stories

During the month of December, I look forward to revisiting favorite holiday books and movies.

Some favorite books:

The Crippled Lamb by Max Lucado
The Legend of Papa Noel: A Cajun Christmas Story by Terri Hoover Dunham
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson

Favorite holiday movies:
Scrooged
It’s a Wonderful Life

If holiday traditions aren’t enough to put a person in the Christmas spirit, it snowed here last evening.

Do you have favorite holiday stories you revisit year after year?

I keep trying to invent traditions and nobody wants to do it. This year I'm trying "crazy singing holiday toy" and all handmade giftbags.

JODY: Hats off to you for making handmade gift bags, but I know you're talented like that. Me, not so much. The "crazy singing holiday toy", does it play incessantly? I can see you having a hard time getting support for that. And remember, all traditions were just crazy ideas in the beginning.

Not having children and living far from our families, we have only a few holiday customs. We have elaborately embroidered stockings Dave's sister made that we put up each year, and I usually make mulled wine or cider to drink while opening presents. When my workload isn't too heavy, I put up a tree.

The one custom we always honor is to buy a special ornament each year, which we have done every year since getting married 26 years ago. Our families have given us other unique ornaments, so when we do put up a tree, every ornament holds a memory and has a story.

It sounds like your Christmas tree is very special, SHAUNA. We usually buy ornaments when we travel to commemorate the trip. Another friend told me recently that she buys each family member an ornament each year. I like the idea of adding a new ornament each year that represents something special. Great idea.
